Tips for tummy time success:

Awake and active tummy time can be introduced from birth and should be encouraged daily.

Tummy time promotes:
Muscle activity needed for rolling, sitting and crawling.

Natural development of the skull. During tummy time the head is away from external pressure and is free to move. Excessive time on the back can lead to a head turn preference and head flattening.

An alternative posture to that adopted in most baby equipment e.g. car seats and floor seats. This keeps your baby’s skeletal system flexible and balanced.

Tips for Tummy Time Success:
1. Start from birth with skin to skin snuggles on your chest. After a couple of weeks, as your baby starts to unravel and lift their head, tummy time should become more deliberate.

2. Start by keep your baby close to you, placing them on your chest, in your arms (such as the Tiger in the tree hold – see main picture) or across you lap (see insert picture). This will help your baby feels safe and secure.

3. Try for little and often throughout the day – one possible way of remembering is to try tummy time activities each nappy change.

4. Build tummy time into your daily routine. Activities such as carrying, winding, massage and early play activities, can all be done with your baby on their tummy.

5. Make it fun for your baby by engaging and interacting with them during tummy time.

Please remember you should always place your baby on their back to sleep and not on their front or side (unless your doctor has advised you of a medical reason to do so).
